Mobile for Officials App Migration

Arbiter Mobile for officials is one of three apps we currently support at ArbiterSports. We were looking to moving from 3 apps to 2, so our Officials app will become part of the overall AS app. In its time, the Officials app did serve the users well and we didn't want to remove any functionality. Arbiter Mobile for Officials launched 8-10 years ago and we put lots of work into it over the first couple of years. In the last few years, we have been unable to put any additional development into the app due to code constraints. Many of our competitors are putting additional resources into their mobile services and we were falling behind in that department.

Problem Statements & Risks

User/Customer Focused

ArbiterSports Focused

  • Currently supporting three different apps

  • Unable to make any dev changes to current officials app

  • Current app is developed in xamarin

  • Difficult to support

After discussing and establishing these problem statements, as a team we started creating a discussion guide and getting interviews set up with users.

As a team, we summed up the key points that reoccurred in each of the interviews and started to make a guide on how we wanted to start designing. We each started to come up with solutions that we assumed would fulfill the needs for the particular pain point. After brainstorming, we each voted on which was the best solution.

Define

While collaborating heavily with our PM and PO tied to the project, We then put together a matrix that would help us decided our MVP for the app.

Once the team finished with defining, we jumped right into designing. Along side us designing, we were prototyping as well to make sure our UX held up.

Game Reports

As we started to wrap up the first round of designing, we were setting up user tests with several officials to make sure we fulfilled their needs. The testing went over so well that we didn’t feel we needed to make any changes to our designs. After every test, our interviewee wanted to take screen shots and show their team because they were so excited. ArbiterSports had a conference where the team showed few screenshots of what was to come. There was a standing ovation from officials in the crowd.

As for development, Im currently working closely with our developers to make sure it comes out just right. We haven’t had really any restrictions or complications with making sure we can push this out to the public and get it in officials hands before the upcoming school year.
